King of the Pippins apple
£1.60 per kilo
Ready E Oct Season Oct - Feb
An apple with an unclear history, thought to have originated in England in the early 1800's, but could have been from France.
Thought to have been originally named Golden Winter Pearmain.
Introduced by Mr Kirke from Brompton, a nurseryman, who named it King of the Pippins.
The fruits are medium in size, round and oblong-conical in shape.
The skin is yellow with a heavy flush of an earthy orange, with occasional green patches. On top of this are broken stripes of red and flecks of russet.
The flesh is creamy white, crisp juicy and firm; sweet yet with a balance of acidity, and a rather nutty flavour. It makes a wonderful open flan as the slices keep their shape when cooked, turning from
cream to yellow. Can also be used for Cider.
