Katy apple
£1.60 per kilo
Ready Early Sept Season Sept - Oct
Officially known as Katja, this apple was raised at Balsård Fruit Breeding Institute, Sweden, in 1947. James Grieve and Worcester Pearmain are the parents of Katja, which was renamed by Sir James Mount, a fruit grower from Kent. It was introduced to the world in 1966. The fruit is medium in size, round and conical in shape. The skin is yellowy green flushed with a bright crimson red and broken red stripes. The flesh inside is white with a hint of green, fine and juicy with a balance of the sweetness and hint of strawberry of Worcester Pearmain, but yet some of the acidity of James Grieve.
Best eaten straight from the tree, as it quickly looses some of its flavour.
