Annie Elizabeth apple
£1.60 per kilo
Ready E October SEASON Nov - April
A bit of a mystery here, a possible parent being Blenheim Orange.
Raised by Samuel Greatorex at Knighton, Leicester, and introduced around 1898.
Some confusion exists as to the origin of the name; some sources say that it was tragically named in memory of his baby daughter, Annie Elizabeth who died in 1866. However, others say that it was named after Annie and Elizabeth, the daughters of Mr Thomas Harrison, who first grew the tree commercially.
It has stunning pink blossom, which made it popular in the Victorian ornamental gardens.
The apples are large in size, round and oblong in shape, often slightly irregular.
The smooth skin consists of a green/yellow base flushed over with orange and flecked with red, and is lightly freckled. The flesh inside is a creamy white colour, juicy with a course texture and a strong, sweet aroma.
They hardly needs to be sweetened when cooked, as the apples are naturally high in sugar; they retains their shape when cooked and so bake well.
