Gravenstein apple
£1.60 per kilo
Ready early Sept Season Sept - Oct
A discrepancy exists over this apples' origin. Some say that it arose at Castle Grafenstein at Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. Others say that it originates from Italy or South Tyrol, where it was known as Ville Blanc.
The fruits are medium large in size, rather chunky and often lop-sided. The skin is yellowy-green covered over with an orange-red flush. The flesh inside is creamy white in colour, crisp and juicy, with a good balance between sweet and acid. When cooked, it makes a juicy smooth fluff, perfect for apple pies.
