Ellisons Orange apple
£1.60 per kilo
Ready M Sept Season Sept - Oct
Grown by Rev C.C. Ellison, Bracebridge, Lincolnshire, and his brother-in laws gardener, Mr Wipf, who worked at Hartsholme Hall. Around the late 1800's, they crossed Cox's Orange Pippin with Calville Blanc, and Ellisons Orange was the result. It was sold on to Mr Pennell, and was initially recorded in 1904. It received an Award of Merit from the RHS in 1911, and a First Class Certificate in 1917.
The fruits are medium in size, and round conical in shape. The skin is a yellowy green, flushed over with an earthy red, and painted with tiny broken red stripes. The crisp flesh is a creamy green- white, fine textured and highly aromatic. It has a strong aniseed flavour, not to everyone's taste, but perfect if you do!
