Egremont Russet apple
£1.60 per kilo
Ready late Sept E Oct Oct - Dec
The parentage of Egremont Russet remains a mystery, but is thought to be English in origin, and is known to have been recorded in 1872. Alleged to have grown on the land of Lord Egremont of Pentworth, Sussex.
An extremely popular apple, both then and now.
The fruits are small to medium in size, round and slightly flat at the top and bottom. The skin is yellowy - green in colour, often hidden almost completely by an orangey - brown russet.
The skin is somewhat tough, but a bite inside reveals the apple's real beauty - a delicious nutty flavoured flesh, creamy -yellow in colour. Although not juicy, the fine textures of these fruits are in a class of their own.
