Charles Ross apple
£1.60 per kilo
Ready M Sept Season Sept - Dec
Raised at Welford Park, Newbury, Berks, by Mr Charles Ross. Peasgood's Nonsuch and Cox's Orange Pippin are the parents here. Curiously it was first exhibited in 1890 as Thomas Andrew Knight, but was re-named in 1899.
The fruits are large and conical in shape, yellow/green over flushed with patchy red stripes. Firm and juicy, the creamy white flesh becomes yellow when cooked, and does not ''fall'' as some apples tend to do (think how a Bramley softens on cooking). Reported by some to have the flavour of pears.
