Blenheim Orange apple
£1.60 per kilo
Ready L Sept season Sept - Jan
Reputed to have been initially grown by a man named Mr Kempster, and was originally known under the name of Kempster's Pippin
Discovered around 1740 by Mr Kempster at Woodstock, near Blenheim, Oxfordshire, but not available until 1818. It received the Banksian Silver medal in 1820.
The fruit is large, round and somewhat flat in shape, with faint ribs at the base. The skin colour is a pale green/yellow, overflushed with an orange-red. On top of this is a freckling of pale russet.
Creamy white inside, rather dry and crumbly but with a distinctive flavour. Extremely good with cheese. Aromatic with a somewhat vinous odour. Cooks well to a firm puree, very useful in many recipes, especially famous for making Apple Charlotte.
